Woodfords Church 150th Anniversary
Celebrating Our Past, Creating Our Future
This year, we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the dedication of Woodfords Congregational Church. Our faith community’s roots precede the Revolutionary War, when our spiritual ancestors first gathered in a chapel on Capisic Street. After the Civil War and Portland’s Great Fire of 1866, congregants living in the growing Woodfords neighborhood began to develop plans for a church building closer to their homes. They began constructing a new house of faith in 1871 and dedicated it in 1872. At that point, Woodfords Congregational Church was officially born.
