About Portland, Maine
Portland is situated on the Atlantic Coast, two hours north of Boston and minutes from all the outdoor beauty and activities that Maine has to offer. The Greater Portland area has a population of approximately 240,000 people and boasts professional sports teams, a nationally known College of Art and Art Museum, a symphony orchestra, and a picturesque oceanfront. There is easy access to the natural beauty of beaches, lakes, mountains and many outdoor sports opportunities. The Old Port District provides myriad eating and shopping experiences within a quaint working waterfront, as well as ferry access to the "calendar islands" of Casco Bay. Winter sports opportunities abound in the public skating arenas, cross-country ski trails, and wonderful downhill skiing mountains which are less than 90 minutes away. Portland has an international jetport and nationally known hospitals, all within a comfortable 20 minute drive of all communities in the area. The city itself is a point of arrival for a growing refugee population. As the largest metropolitan area in Maine, Portland faces many typical urban challenges, but its people are caring, giving, and supportive of those less fortunate.
