Who We Are
Project FEED (Food Emergency Exchange Depot) is an emergency food depot located in the basement of Woodfords Congregational Church. Project FEED was founded in 1975 by a group of clergy and lay-people concerned with the growing number of Portland residents who were without a reliable source of food in emergencies. Project FEED is supported by 23 churches and 2 synagogues in the Greater Portland area and is staffed completely by volunteers.
Who We Serve
Project FEED provides food to take home for individuals and families in crisis. We offer supplies for 1-7 days per person in the household. Usually this is the bridge people need to their next source of income.
We require a 3-month waiting period between visits; FEED is intended to be for emergency use only, not as a steady supply of food. We require clients to bring a referral form with them each time they come from a social service agency, church, or synagogue. This referral informs us that the client is connected with someone in the community who can guide them toward helping agencies. If you need a copy of our referral form, please contact us at projectfeed@hotmail.com or call 761-3920 during our operating hours, and we will send you one.
Who Can Help
We accept donations during our operating hours, or by arrangement. We appreciate donations of non-perishable goods such as: canned vegetables, fruits, soups, meats, and juices; boxed items -- macaroni and cheese, instant potato, instant milk, baking mix, gelatins and puddings; personal care items -- shampoos, bar soap, large-size diapers, tissues, toothpaste, and toothbrushes; and household items -- paper towels, laundry detergent, and dish detergent.
Planning a food drive? Please e-mail us at projectfeed@hotmail.com or call (761-3920), and we will send you a complete list of items that we use.
"Our great overriding focus is always the alleviation of physical hunger. We aim to identify it and adminster to it, within the guidelines of our or organization and to the best of our abilities … We minister to the whole person when we remember that we never feed food alone, we also feed emotions and attitudes. We feed a second hunger as we try to communicate our loving care and concern for them as valuable human beings, to give the hopeless hope and a belief in their capacity to move ahead, to reaffirm and reinforce those who are so beaten down by life. …"
