Missions

Mission outreach is an integral part of life at Woodfords.  We participate not only in United Church of Christ-sponsored offerings, such as Neighbors in Need and One Great Hour of Sharing, but also in globally recognized groups like Amnesty International, SERRV, Habitat for Humanity, and Heifer Project International.

Our members -- collectively and individually -- give time, money, and talent to many local organizations, including Wayside Evening Soup Kitchen and the Preble Street Resource Center, the Maine Youth Center, Maine Medical Center, the Salvation Army, The Cancer Community Center, United Way, and the Refugee Resettlement Program.  In 1975 Woodfords Church was instrumental in the creation of Project FEED, a food depot that is still housed in the basement of the church and is run by volunteers, both from the congregation and the larger community.  Woodfords members helped spearhead the creation of The AIDS Project.  Woodfords has served as a clearinghouse for medical supplies and other items for Honduran relief and for school kits for children all over the world.  The use of our facilities by more than 40 church and non-profit groups confirms our commitment to the greater Portland community.

Ministry to Elders

Woodfords Congregational Church U.C.C., is grateful to the late Iona and Raymond Grant for remembering Woodfords in their will. Their wish was to improve and support the health, welfare, and spiritual life of the church members who are 65 and over through the use of their bequest. They believed in and were dedicated to the teachings of Jesus Christ and of their church to "... love one another, because love is from God."

Examples of help offered church members that may be requested include:

  1. Subsidize, when appropriate, emergency response (Lifeline) units, hearing aids, glasses, dentistry or home care services.
  2. Provide opportunities for learning activities, such as: Book Club.
  3. Provide opportunities for socialization.
  4. Encourage volunteerism.
  5. Counseling, both emotional and spiritual.
  6. Luncheons, 90 plus birthday party, picnic.
  7. Provide opportunity for greater participation in church life.

Anyone who has a need, knows of a member with a need, or has an idea that could benefit the elderly either as an individual or as a group is encouraged to contact one of the ministers or the Grant Fund Committee.  The Committee will consider each request thoughtfully and prayerfully.  All information will be held in strict confidence within the committee.

Contact Grant Fund Committee through the church office Tel. 207-774-8243 or e-mail info@woodfordschurch.org  for requests and/or information.
